A bird bath is not only useful in summer. Especially when the natural waters freeze over in winter, they are one of the few opportunities for birds to quench their thirst. But even there, the water can quickly turn into ice. How can this be prevented?

A bird bath should be made of frost-resistant material

It doesn't work without commitment

A drinking trough must be set up outdoors so that birds can reach it at all times. However, severe frosts can already prevail there from October and into March. There is no magic trick that will prevent the water in a bird bath from freezing in winter. You either have to invest some time every day or throw yourself into "manageable" expenses.

Pour in lukewarm water

A free method of providing drinkable water to the feathered visitors every day requires a few minutes each day. But the effort is limited. After all, not every day is frosty and the potions are usually not far from the front door. There is always some lukewarm water to hand. Keep pouring warm water into the drinker to keep the temperature of its contents in the positive range.

tips

Also remember to winterize the bird bath. Otherwise it can be damaged and no longer hold the water.

Heat with grave light

The constant flame of a grave candle is enough to raise the temperature of the water to such an extent that no ice can form. For this, however, it must be possible to set up the grave light below the potions. For example, in a large, stable and perforated pot that lets enough oxygen through to the candle. The potion is simply placed on it. If the candle only burns from morning to night, it should last up to a week.

use hot plate

The market is inventive and closes every gap in demand. That's why there are now solutions that allow the bird bath to be set up in winter without having to laboriously prevent ice from forming.

  • there are heated bird baths
  • also special heating and warming plates
  • these are placed under potions
  • a nearby socket may be required
  • some are preheated in the microwave
  • they emit heat for up to eight hours.
