Hanging amaryllis create a sensation in living rooms decorated for winter. The unusual decoration idea puts an end to broken flower stalks in the pot and sadly drooping amaryllis flowers in the vase. Read this guide on how to properly hang an amaryllis.

Amaryllis with a difference: hung upside down

Shopping list and material requirements

Buds of amaryllis cut flowers are the main protagonists for a hanging decoration with a WOW effect. You can buy beautiful varieties in furious colors in online shops or in local specialist shops. In budding amaryllis, green sepals envelop the closed flowers, which unfold after the first water intake. The following accessories will be needed when hanging amaryllis:

  • Transparent adhesive tape (e.g. scotch tape)
  • Sharp, sanitized knife
  • sewing needle (longer than the diameter of the flower stalk)
  • Tearproof thread (must fit through the eye of the needle)
  • Watering can with soft water (ideally collected rainwater)

Hanging amaryllis skillfully - instructions with tips & tricks

Nine out of ten Amaryllis cut flowers have split open at the stem end. For life as a bouquet in the vase, this property is an advantage for optimal water absorption. On the other hand, if the flowers are to dangle picturesquely from the ceiling, an intact end of the stem is desirable. Appropriate preparation solves the problem. The following guide explains how to do it right:

Prepare amaryllis

  1. Wrap the lower end of the flower stalk tightly with adhesive tape
  2. Use a knife to cut off the stems below the tape
  3. Thread the thread into the needle
  4. Pierce the stem above the tape with the needle
  5. Pull the thread through the stem
  6. Remove needle
  7. Knot the thread into a loop

Hold the amaryllis upside down. Please pour room-warm, lime-free water into the hollow stem. From now on, please check regularly whether the cistern in the stem needs to be filled up.

Hang and decorate the amaryllis

With wintry or festive Christmas accessories you can give your amaryllis a decorative finishing touch before you hang up the decoration. Wrap the flower stalk with pine green and colorful ribbons to match the color of the flower. Attach shimmering Christmas balls, rustic pine cones and a small chain of LED lights to the fir greenery.

tips

Bargains can make an amaryllis bulb bloom themselves. This is significantly cheaper than buying expensive amaryllis cut flowers for a hanging decoration creation. Simply plant half of a fresh knight's star onion in loose, peat-free soil and place in a dark, cool location until budding begins. After a change of location on the sunny, warm window sill, the majestic flower stem rises, at the top of which the magnificent calyxes unfold.
