Indoor gardeners can easily plant pineapples themselves. Even beginners can shine with the green project. This guide explains what really matters when growing pineapple plants.

A pineapple grows well in a pot

Location selection - tips

The optimal location simulates the sunny, warm and humid conditions that pineapple plants are used to in their tropical home regions. In the Central European climate, the location for your own pineapple cultivation should be under glass, ideally facing south. The following options are available:

  • Windowsill on the south side
  • Sunny, heated conservatory
  • South-facing windows of damp and warm rooms such as bathrooms, indoor pools or spas

Constant temperatures of 23° to 30° Celsius and high humidity of 60 percent complete the perfect site conditions. On the other hand, cold drafts and temperatures below 16° Celsius torpedo the successful cultivation of pineapples.

Planting material and accessories - list

With every pineapple fruit from the store shelf, you can literally grab the opportunity by the forelock. In fact, all the botanical elements are present in the tuft of a fruit for pineapple roots to sprout at this point. The list of planting material and accessories is pleasingly short:

  • Medium ripe pineapple with fresh green leaves and golden flesh under the skin
  • Flower pot or plastic pot with drainage hole, sufficiently large volume and diameter
  • Cactus soil, palm soil or commercial potting soil as a substrate (pH value 5)
  • Expanded clay,(19.73€) lava granules or small pebbles as drainage
  • Long blade knife, freshly sharpened and sanitized
  • Spoon or small flower scoop
  • plastic bag, twine

Pineapples have an aversion to hard, calcareous water. Therefore, provide collected rainwater or stagnant tap water for the water supply.

How to plant pineapples - step-by-step instructions

Proceed in two stages when planting pineapples skillfully. In the first step, you prepare the leaf-tufted cuttings, which you plant expertly in the second step. How to do it right:

Prepare leaf tuft

Place the fruit on a firm surface. Take the knife in one hand. With the other hand, stabilize the pineapple. Cut off the top of the leaf with about 3 centimeters of pulp. Now carefully remove the pulp around the stalk with a spoon. When doing so, spare the slightly raised shoot points from which the roots will later grow. Now the leaf crown is perfectly prepared for planting in the pot.

Plant pineapple cuttings

  • Create a 2-3 cm high drainage in the plant pot on the bottom
  • Fill the pot three quarters with substrate
  • Create a small hollow in the middle of the substrate
  • Put the tuft of leaves in the substrate well
  • Fill with soil to just below the base of the leaves
  • Press the substrate down for a bottom connection without air holes
  • Pour the pineapple cuttings with room-warm water

Finally, put the plastic bag over the leaf crown and pot. The warm, humid microclimate thus created activates the growth of strong roots. Daily airing of the transparent hood effectively prevents mold growth.

tips

Indoor gardeners with a penchant for a challenge can grow pineapples from seed. Extra large, fully ripe pineapples offer the best chance of a bountiful seed harvest. With a bit of luck, up to 30 seeds will be hidden in the flesh. Pineapple seeds are reddish brown and 2 to 3 millimeters in size.
