Packed in a protective jute bag, sub-zero temperatures will not cause any problems for your plants in winter. On this page you can read why you should use this material of all things and how you can make effective winter protection from jute.

Jute bags protect against the cold and let sunlight through

Properties of jute

  • weakly translucent
  • robust
  • has a natural appearance
  • also available in bright colors or with patterns

The advantage of jute compared to foil or fleece is that the material is more air permeable. Thus, there is no risk of rotting due to stagnant air under the winter protection.

Note: Only cover deciduous plants with burlap. Evergreen plants need sunlight in order to be able to carry out the photosynthesis responsible for the leaf colouration. In frosty winters, you should only attach the winter protection for a short time.

Make winter protection from jute

Taking into account the above condition, jute winter protection is suitable for all types of plants. It is best to use cut goods that you can buy at the hardware store. Adjust the size of your plant as needed. It is even advisable to put several layers over the plant if you cover the entire crown.

Further measures

However, caution is required when the temperatures in winter are not only below zero, but there is also a lot of snow. In the case of far-reaching crowns, the precipitation remains on the jute sack (€10.99) and presses on the plant. But you can also prevent this:

  • Cut four wooden stakes.
  • Stick these into the ground around the plant so that a square frames the sapling.
  • The distance to the plant should be at least half a meter.
  • Now throw the jute sack over the plant together with the snow frame.
  • Secure the winter protection by tying it loosely(!).

tips

Small plants require a similar procedure. In this case you only use small wooden sticks that you wrap with rabbit wire. In this border you fill leaves. Cover the crown with the jute as usual.
