Hardly any garden floor is naturally flat. However, large and small bumps can complicate the use and maintenance of a garden. That's why it makes sense to invest some work and reshape the surface.

The three alternatives
On an uneven surface, there are both depressions and elevations that can be annoying. They have to be eliminated. There are three possible ways to do this:
- fill in depressions
- remove elevations
- Smooth out bumps
When deciding which of the methods is suitable for your own garden, only a close inspection of the area to be leveled can provide information. The aim must be to complete the implementation as cost-effectively and time-saving as possible.
preparation
Before you start leveling the surface, some preparatory steps may still be necessary:
- Clear the area of garden furniture, rain barrels, (53.99 €) etc.
- collect larger stones
- Remove plant and root remains
- if necessary, loosen the surface of the earth
fill in depressions
You need enough soil to fill in depressions. If you can't spare them elsewhere in the garden, you'll have to buy them. Depending on the future use of the area, the earth can be mixed with sand or gravel. This increases the water permeability.
tips
If you intend to use the leveled area for growing vegetables or fruits, you should additionally improve the quality of the garden soil. Enrich the filling material with additional compost.
remove elevations
Removing elevations is a simple job that any healthy garden owner can do, albeit quite time-consuming and sometimes strenuous. You will need a spade and a shovel for this. With a pickaxe you can trodden
Loosen the soil, remove turf and loosen larger stones.
The earth is removed shovel by shovel until the elevation is leveled as desired. The removed soil is collected in wheelbarrows or buckets and then taken to another location. It can be used, for example, to fill in depressions.
tips
The more extensive this measure is, the more it is advisable to wear thick gloves. Otherwise, blisters on the hands can hardly be avoided.
rolling the garden soil
Different heights cannot be compensated with rollers. But minor bumps can easily be removed with the heavy weight of a roller. This method is suitable, for example, for areas that are later to be sown with grass. Larger rollers can be rented by the hour from a hardware store.
