- A seating area shielded by climbing plants
- Which plants are suitable?
- Maintain wooden trellis properly
As well as you may get along with your neighbors, many prefer a protected space in their second living room for sunbathing or a family chat. Pretty overgrown trellises blend harmoniously into the garden idyll and provide the desired shielding. In addition, structured garden spaces can be created with trellises.

A seating area shielded by climbing plants
Delimited by trellis, a seat is created where you can read undisturbed or enjoy your coffee. Opt for a stable climbing aid, because this has to bear the weight of the plants for many years. The elements should be designed in such a way that the plants are able to grow not only in height, but also in width, depending on the species. As a result, the climbing artists cover the entire construction over time and this becomes an extremely decorative design element.
For creepers whose shoots grow vertically upwards and which wrap themselves around a suitable object in a circle, simple plant stakes made of hardwood, which you stick into the ground not too far apart, are sufficient. Climbing plants with or without adhesive discs, on the other hand, need trellis fences with a grid that ensure a stable hold.
You can find a great selection of trellis at Holzland.
Which plants are suitable?
Since climbing plants should thrive in the chosen place for a long time, you should choose them carefully.
Popular climbers are:
kind | short description |
---|---|
clematis | Lush blooms and partly attractive infructescence. Needs a cool, moist rooting ground but needs warmth and sun for the flowers. Humus-rich, calcareous substrate is preferred. |
ivy | Evergreen ensures privacy even in the cold season. Thrives in full sun as well as in the shade provided the soil is well drained and rich in humus. |
honeysuckle | The flowers exude an intoxicatingly sweet scent. Grows in sun and partial shade in any nutrient-rich, well-drained substrate. |
climbing hydrangea | Charming with flowers up to 25 centimeters wide. Prefers partial shade and well-drained, humus-rich soil. |
climbing rose | These usually only need to be trimmed once a year. They need a lot of sun and a humus-rich, loamy substrate. |
knotweed | Enchanted with dense clouds of white flower panicles. Very undemanding. |
Wild Wine | Turns bright red in autumn, making it an attractive eye-catcher in the garden. Undemanding. |
Maintain wooden trellis properly

Image: T&J sheet by Holzland
If you opt for a trellis fence made of plastic or metal, it does not require any further care after planting. This is somewhat different with wood, which fits very well into the garden thanks to its natural look.
Renovate the trellis preferably when you cut back the plants. Check that none of the struts are broken and replace them if necessary. A fresh coat of paint is necessary at regular intervals, depending on how the wood has been treated:
- Thin-layer glazes are every three years,
- Thick layer glazes reapplied every 5 years.
- If you have opted for opaque paint, a new coat of paint must be applied after 7 years at the latest.
tips
Densely overgrown trellis fences offer many creatures protection and food. Birds like to nest in the branches of ivy or virginia creeper. Bumblebees and bees feast on the flowers. Beetles and spiders, which help you in the fight against vermin, find hidden shelter in the climbing plants.
