If you don't have a lot of time and/or don't feel like gardening, you should lay a lawn - at least that's the common opinion. But even a lawn needs to be cared for, throughout the growing season.

Moss can also spread in the lawn in winter

How do I prepare my lawn for winter?

When the days get shorter and the leaves on the trees turn colorful, then it's autumn. The garden furniture is packed up, the beds are winterized and the lawn is mowed one last time. Can winter come now? Not quite, because your lawn could use a little more care. In this way you reduce the maintenance effort next spring.

Mow the lawn while it grows back. Depending on the weather, this can be the case well into November. Do not leave any fallen or blown leaves on the lawn for too long, they suffocate the grass plants to breathe, but allow moss to sprout all the better.

However, do not mow the grass too short, as this could damage the roots. If you have enough time, you can scarify the lawn again and remove any moss that may be present. Afterwards, overseeding is recommended for larger gaps, provided it is still warm enough. Keep the lawn seeds moist so they germinate before winter.

Winterizing the lawn step by step:

  • no nitrogen-rich fertilizer in the fall
  • Remove leaves from the lawn
  • Mow the lawn, but not too short
  • possibly scarify
  • remove moss
  • apply overseed if necessary

tips

Don't leave fallen leaves on your lawn all winter, they could suffocate the grass underneath and encourage moss growth.
