Bed boundaries give the garden structure and make work easier, since the lawn does not have to be cut several times a year. Very attractive and easy to make yourself is a bed edging made of natural stone, which blends harmoniously into both natural and modern green spaces.

Natural stone is ideal for edging beds

Which stones are suitable?

In principle, you can use any natural stone that you like. An even shape is an advantage, as this stone bed edging is easier to set yourself.

The classic among these bezels is called a "one-liner". It consists of natural stone cubes with an edge length of eight to ten centimetres. Alternatively, you can use natural stone slabs. Because of the longer shape, these are particularly suitable for generous borders with straight edges.

These are placed in concrete and grouted. This results in an unobtrusive, clear line that goes very well with a wide variety of garden styles. Even in winter, when there is little to see of the perennials, this bed edging is very attractive. If you let the stones protrude a little over the edge of the lawn, you get a practical guide for the lawn mower.

How is the border set?

Even if you are not very experienced in setting stones, a bed edging made of natural stone can be easily implemented. To do this, proceed as follows:

  • In the case of round or semi-circular beds in particular, mark the shape with string or pole scaffolding.
  • Remove the layer of grass.
  • Dig a pit. This should be a little wider and about 25 centimeters deeper than the stones.
  • Fill in a layer of grit and/or sand and compact it.
  • Do not fill in patio cement too sparingly.
  • Insert stones flush and tap in lightly with a rubber mallet.
  • Smooth the inside and outside of the cement bed with the trowel and shape with taper upwards.
  • Let harden well.
  • It is then filled up with earth.

Depending on how deep you have placed the stones, the result is a flat surface or an attractive border a few centimeters high.

tips

Make sure the edging reaches deep enough into the ground. This ensures that weeds do not grow under the border into the flower bed. As a result, you have to pull far fewer weeds.
