A water reservoir in the flower pot is particularly valuable during the holiday season, as the reservoir takes over the watering for at least a few days. Various designs for watering flower pots are commercially available, but with a little skill you can build the water tank yourself.

Expanded clay in the lower part of the flower pot can act as a water reservoir

Build a water tank for the flower pot yourself, step-by-step explanation

All you need is a flower pot about 30 cm high, some sealing compound, expanded clay, (19.73€) gravel or pottery shards, a piece of fleece, as well as a drill (97.00€) and several masonry drills.

  1. If the flower pot has a hole in the bottom, it must be closed with this flower pot variant.
  2. Use waterproof material such as "power putty" (waterproof glue that hardens) or silicone.
  3. Seal the hole and let the compound used harden.
  4. At a height of about 10 cm (measured from the ground up), several holes must now be drilled in the flower pot.
  5. Now put expanded clay, coarse gravel or shards of pottery into the pot up to the row of holes.
  6. Cover the drainage with a piece of fleece and fill in the soil.
  7. Plant your flower and water until it spills out of the holes in the pot.
  8. The water tank is now full and the plant can help itself over a longer period of time.

Drill holes in a flower pot

Since this is a brittle material, you have to work very carefully.
Proceed as follows:

  • Glue fabric tape around the flower pot at the appropriate height. In this way, the clay cannot splinter and the drill bit does not slip off so easily.
  • Mark the holes in the round.
  • Place the pot so that it cannot slip or have a second person hold it tight.
  • Pre-drill slowly with a thin masonry bit.
  • Then widen the hole with a larger drill bit.
  • Remove the tape.
