Flower pots are usually used for cultivating flowers, perennials, etc. However, smart people have come up with something very special: using flower pots as small heaters.

A terracotta pot and a candle can be used to protect a greenhouse from frost

Why a flower pot heater?

When the days get a little cooler and you still want to sit in the garden house (€24.90), a flower pot heater can give off a little cozy warmth. When sitting with friends, the small heater brings a certain coziness. Although its heating power is not great, it still creates a homely atmosphere.

Several of these mini heaters can ensure that the temperature in the greenhouse does not fall below zero. This makes it possible to safely overwinter frost-sensitive plants.

How does the tea light heater work?

Several tea lights are lit and covered with terracotta or clay pots. The waste heat from the candles stays inside the pots and heats up the clay. The radiant heat is released into the room. Depending on the size of the room, it takes a different amount of time before a temperature increase can be measured at all. However, if the stove is on the table and you sit around it, you can quickly feel the radiant heat.

Step-by-step instructions for building a tealight oven

Before starting work, tools and materials should be ready.

The material needed

  • a trivet made of clay/terracotta with a rim
  • a small clay pot with drainage hole, about 16 cm
  • a large clay pot with drainage hole, about 20 cm
  • 6 nuts
  • small and large washers
  • 1 threaded rod approx. 30 cm long
  • a spacer (metal tube, slightly larger in diameter than the threaded rod) of about 5 cm
  • several tea lights
  • Drill (€97.00) with masonry bits of various strengths

The instruction

First, all the materials needed are laid out on a clean and solid worktop. Then it can go.

  1. Drill a hole in the coaster. This is where the threaded rod will later be fed through.
  2. So that the machine does not run away when drilling, the center of the coaster should first be center punched and possibly carefully pre-drilled with a small drill.
  3. If the threaded rod is not available in a length of 30 cm, a longer rod must now be cut to length with a hacksaw.
  4. Now insert the threaded rod into the hole in the coaster, secure it on both sides with washers and nuts to prevent it from slipping. Be careful when doing this, the clay can break quickly.
  5. Now the small pot is attached to the pole. To do this, first screw a nut onto the threaded rod, the distance to the saucer must be large enough that the pot and saucer are separated from each other by a large gap.
  6. Place a washer on the nut.
  7. Push the small pot with the opening downwards onto the threaded rod, secure at the top with a washer and nut.
  8. Attach the spacer.
  9. Unscrew nut, place washer over it.
  10. Put the large flower pot over the small pot. The spacer creates a cavity between the two.
  11. Secure pot with washer and final acorn nut.
  12. Now the tea lights can be placed on the coaster and lit.
