What kind of question will most readers say. You dispose of a flower pot in the garbage can. But not every flower pot has the right place there. It always depends on the material from which the pot was made. It may even be possible to recycle.

Pottery shards can be reused, e.g. to protect drainage holes or to label flower beds

Crafting material of flower pots

In earlier years there were only flower pots made of clay. Flower pots are now made from a wide variety of materials:

  • volume
  • stone
  • wood
  • pottery
  • metal
  • concrete
  • artificial stone
  • plastics
  • Composites such as fiberglass or fiberstone

All of these materials are special and do not belong in the residual waste (grey bin) or in the yellow bin for recyclables.

Which material goes where?

Clay or terracotta flower pots usually last a long time. But they also get cracks or fall to the ground and shatter. The shards can be used as drainage in other pots or disposed of in small quantities with the residual waste. If you have to dispose of large quantities of potsherds, it is best to go to the recycling center and throw them away with the building rubble.
Depending on the material, disposal fees may also apply at the recycling center.

Flower pots made of natural stone or wood

This equipment can also be used for many years. Old natural stone troughs, for example, can become really valuable. Those who want to get rid of them can give them away to lovers, wood can be burned, natural stone can be used for other purposes, for example, as a mini pond. Destroyed stone pots are also part of the rubble.

Planters made of metal, concrete, artificial stone etc.

Metal containers always belong at the recycling center and here in the scrap container. Metal can be recycled and reused.
Concrete containers etc. can be disposed of in small quantities in the residual waste bin. Larger amounts belong to the rubble at the recycling center.

flower pots of plastic

Small amounts of plastic pots can be disposed of in the yellow bin/sack. Plastics are usually recycled. Up until now, however, no recycling has been planned for fiber composites. Such planters go in small quantities with the residual waste, large containers are best taken back to the recycling center.
