Lawn seeds are finicky because they don't germinate and take root in just any garden soil. The right substrate is a guarantee for a lush green carpet of lawn. This guide explains how to skilfully prepare garden soil for sowing lawns.

Leveling the subfloor - tips for the rough leveling
In order for fallow land to be transformed into an even lawn, it is important to have a clean, level surface. A gradient of no more than 2 percent effectively prevents rain accumulation and waterlogging. In order to straighten the terrain, small pegs act as height markers. With the help of a laser spirit level, even laypeople can carry out the necessary measurement work precisely. This is how you correctly lay the rough subgrade as a substrate for lawn soil:
- Remove the existing turf with a spade or peeling machine
- Carefully remove stones, roots and weeds
- Dig up the ground deeply with a tiller or manually with two spades and smooth with a rake
- Ideally lay out weed or mole fleece
Now spread garden soil on the prepared substrate as a base layer for the lawn. Enrich the soil beforehand with compost, quartz sand (€15.85) and horn meal. Lawn grasses will find perfect living conditions if you sift the garden soil in advance. It is important to ensure that the topsoil is distributed evenly and evenly. This works perfectly with a straight rake to level out hills and valleys.
Fine planum made of garden soil - this is how it works
Leave the rough subgrade for two to four weeks to allow the garden soil to settle. Then fine-tune the lawn soil as follows before sowing:
- The best time is between mid-May and mid-June or early September to early October
- If necessary, measure lowered garden soil and top up to the correct level
- Weed and rake the entire area
With the help of a lawn roller, you can effortlessly level larger clods of earth. Finally, work the topsoil with a rake until it has a fine, crumbly consistency.
