It is considered a popular hedging plant for gardens, residential areas and other areas. Thanks to its evergreen foliage, it acts as a visual and wind protection all year round. But those who choose the laurel cherry should not take the planting lightly.

When is the best time to plant?
Bare root laurel cherries that have already experienced stress from being planted out of the ground should be planted with care. The ideal time is in the spring between April and May.
Container plants have a fully developed root ball. The laurel cherry can be planted all year round on frost-free days. However, it is best to plant them before the onset of winter. Then it has a chance to root, which reduces its susceptibility to frost.
What are the site conditions for the laurel cherry?
Most laurel cherries prefer a half-shady to shady location. The place should be based on their original distribution area (Asia Minor and the Mediterranean). That means above all: warm. Nevertheless, too much sunlight causes problems for these plants. Furthermore, the location for the laurel cherry should preferably be sheltered from the wind. In wind-protected locations, the risk of frost damage is lower.
What characteristics should the floor have?
The laurel cherry has low demands on the soil. If the substrate is too dry for a long time, there is an increased risk of disease. It is therefore important to keep the soil fresh to moist. On the other hand, wetness in the root area causes problems for this plant.
When the planting pit has been dug twice the diameter and depth of the root ball, the soil surrounding the plant should have the following characteristics:
- medium to deep
- slightly acidic to alkaline pH
- moderately moist
- well drained
- relaxed
- rich in humus
- high nutrient content
What distance is necessary and which plant neighbors are suitable?
The planting distance depends on the achievable growth width and for this reason varies from variety to variety. It also depends on whether the laurel cherry should act as a solitaire or as a hedge that is easy to cut. Azaleas, rhododendrons, ferns, ground covers, conifers, medlar and heart lilies have proven to be suitable plant neighbors.

The 'Etna' variety is an exception. In contrast to other laurel cherry varieties, it tolerates full sun locations.
