Many a gardener gets annoyed when the lawn consists almost entirely of moss. So why not put moss right away as an alternative to conventional lawns? This is even possible without any problems if star moss is planted. This is how you ensure an evergreen lawn replacement.

The Mastkraut Sternmoos

Strictly speaking, Sternmoos is not a moss, but a pearl herb from the carnation family. The very low ground cover forms dense cushions that are covered with countless small white starry flowers from June to August.

The cushion perennial does not grow higher than five centimeters and is therefore ideal as a lawn replacement. It is evergreen and tolerates temperatures as low as minus 35 degrees.

The tender star moss can hardly assert itself against competitors. So that the area is not overgrown by other plants, it is worth edging it with lawn edging stones.

Sternmoos also grows in direct sunlight, but there is a risk that the delicate plant will dry out too quickly. So that the ground cover can unfold its full bloom, the soil must always be slightly moist.

Planting can be done at any time as long as the ground is not frozen. Only in midsummer is it not advisable to create a replacement lawn. The designated area must be carefully cleared of weeds. Too light soils are improved with mature compost.

Caring for Sternmoos lawns properly

The soil must never dry out completely, whereby waterlogging must be avoided at all costs. Occasional fertilizer applications are recommended.

Mowing is not necessary as the ground cover stays very low. Should a perennial grow a little higher, it can simply be shortened with secateurs. As a result, the plants branch out even better. However, pruning prevents profuse flowering.

Star moss is hardy. The area should be cleared of leaves before winter. Too much moisture builds up under the mulch, causing the cushion perennial to rot.

tips and tricks

Star moss tends to lift off the ground after a few weeks. It should then simply be pushed back down to earth. This can also be achieved by frequent entry. Therefore, this ground cover is an ideal lawn substitute.
