Several depressions have formed on the lawn in which rainwater collects or accumulates. The terrace or sidewalk was built later and the lawn surface is now a few centimeters lower. How can the lawn be raised?

Methods of Raising a Lawn

  • Cutting off lawn tiles
  • Remove old lawn
  • Remove weeds from the lawn with a weed killer
  • Spread a thick layer of topsoil
  • Create turf

Raise a small piece of lawn a few inches

If the distance between the lawn surface and the deck surface is several inches, raise the lawn as follows:

Poke out individual turf tiles along the edge to a depth of up to 20 centimeters and set them aside. Fill in the soil with topsoil, gravel or a mixture of sand and humus to make up the difference. Level the ground and give it a few days to set.

Then put the grass slabs back on and tread carefully. If you water the lawn well now, you shouldn't be able to see anything from the work after just a few days.

Elevate large lawns

For very large areas, it is easier to remove the old turf and apply an appropriately thick layer of topsoil.

If the lawn is very sparse, you can simply cover the old lawn with soil. Weeds, especially dandelions, goutweed, couch grass and field horsetail, should be carefully removed beforehand.

Then sow the lawn again or lay a turf that has already formed a dense turf.

Fill in depressions in the lawn

Fill small depressions in the lawn with topsoil or humus-rich garden soil. If the layer is only a few centimeters thick, over time the old grass will penetrate the new layer of soil.

In the case of deeper holes, all you can do is fill in the sinks and sow new lawn seeds. To do this, choose the same seed from the rest of the lawn so that you do not get unsightly shades.

tips and tricks

If the ground is very solid, it is worth trying, but it will take some time. Sprinkle a thin layer of fine sand between the lawn plants every two months. Over time, the lawn rises and the soil is loosened at the same time.
