Lawn seeds need to be sown at the right time. This applies to the new installation as well as to the reseeding and repair. You can find out when to sow your lawn correctly here.

The best time to sow a new lawn

Practically, twice a year there is the opportunity to create a new lawn by sowing. In order to give the sensitive seeds the best starting conditions, these two dates are possible:

  • When the ground has warmed up to 10 degrees Celsius in spring
  • This is usually the end of April/beginning of May
  • The second time window opens from mid-September to October

During the sweltering summer heat you should refrain from seeding a lawn. High temperatures combined with dry soil make life difficult for tender seedlings.

When is the lawn sown after scarifying?

Scarifying in spring or autumn plays an important role in exemplary lawn care. This is usually followed by a battered lawn. Sowing lawn seeds helps to ensure that the green develops back into a dense carpet as quickly as possible. Here's how to do it:

  • Immediately after scarifying, sow fresh lawn seeds widely
  • Spread lengthwise and crosswise with a spreader ideally
  • Sieve, roll and water the seed with a maximum of 0.5 centimeters of sand or vermiculite

Leave no time between combing out moss and weeds before sowing the seeds. Otherwise, unwanted growth will spread where new grass is supposed to thrive.

Which date is suitable for reseeding?

If the lawn is bare or sparse overall, reseeding at the right time can remedy the shortcoming. Instead of a completely new installation, this type of repair is much less complicated. Again, twice a season you have the opportunity to give your lawn new splendor. How to be successful:

  • Stressed lawns absorb the seed particularly well from April to June
  • The ground should be thawed to a depth of 15 centimeters and there should no longer be a risk of frost
  • Alternatively, lawn seeds germinate and thrive in sun-warmed soil from September to early October

Reseed in spring, give the seeds a sufficiently long period of growth and rooting. If you decide on a date in early autumn, the natural rainfall will provide the important watering.

tips and tricks

The soil quality for lawn seeds is optimized by adding vital lime or rock flour (€14.13) as part of the preparatory work. Prudent hobby gardeners test the pH value of the future lawn in advance. If this is significantly below the ideal result of 6-7, the soil is too acidic for lush lawn growth. A well-dosed dose of lawn lime will remedy this in no time.
