A hanging bird bath is the only acceptable option in some gardens. For example, if a cat regularly roams the ground, wild birds will find drinking and bathing opportunities at a safe height. How to make such a potion yourself.

In principle, any vessel can be hung on sufficiently strong ropes as a bird bath

clay or concrete?

Some materials that are easy to shape can be used to construct bird baths. For example sound. But clay requires some knowledge of materials, as well as a turntable and a kiln. Unless you are a hobbyist or even a professional potter, you should start your first attempts in a guided course.

It is easier for laypeople to use concrete. With a little skill you can also build beautiful bird baths yourself. They can even be individually painted after drying.

Required material

If you want to make a concrete bird bath yourself, go to a hardware store. You can get almost everything you need to build a hanging bird bath there:

  • concrete
  • bucket
  • trowel
  • spatula
  • about 3-5 kg of sand
  • abrasive sponge

Add the following things to your budget:

  • cling film
  • oil and brush
  • four corks
  • thin gloves

tips

Fine dust is thrown up when working with concrete. Therefore, for your own safety, use a respirator. You can also get these cheaply at hardware stores.

instructions for construction

  1. Spread out several layers of cling film on a flat surface approximately 60 x 60 cm. The layers should overlap a fair bit.
  2. Slightly dampen the sand and put about 2 kg of it on the cling film.
  3. Form a round dome with your hands. It should be about 25 to 40 cm in diameter. Their height should rise steadily from the edge and be a maximum of 8 to 10 cm at the highest point. Add more sand if needed.
  4. Then use the spatula to smooth the shape, especially the edges.
  5. Cover the sand with several layers of foil and then coat them with cooking oil.
  6. Mix the concrete in a bucket according to the instructions.
  7. Carefully spread the concrete onto the sand mound. It should be applied evenly and max. 2-3 cm thick.
  8. Insert the four corks into the concrete. Evenly spaced and 2 cm from the edge. You can dip them in oil beforehand.
  9. Let the mold dry for several days.
  10. Detach the dried mold from the foil and remove the corks.
  11. Use the sanding pad to smooth any sharp edges on the concrete.
  12. Attach weatherproof ropes to the four holes so you can hang the potion. You are welcome to paint them with suitable colors beforehand.

tips

Make sure that the bowl is not too big and thick-walled. Concrete is heavy and needs a stable hanging option.
