Why buy when there is a nicer way? If you build a bird bath yourself, you are guaranteed to get a one-of-a-kind product. Many materials are suitable for the simple shape. Everyone can choose according to their preferences. And the outside of the potion can be decorated to your heart's content.

Homemade bird baths can be decorated however you like

What can a potion be made of?

The simple bowl shape makes it possible for a bird bath to be made from a wide variety of materials. There are of course a few subtle and not always insignificant differences. The price for the procurement of materials plays a role. The effort and for the processing and the feasibility at home also have a say.

Whenever possible, however, personal taste should decide. It is also ideal if the drinking trough blends harmoniously into the environment. You can use the following materials.

  • stone or cast stone
  • concrete
  • volume
  • weather-resistant wood
  • metal

stone and clay

Beautiful bird baths can be formed from stone and clay. Many small figures can also be made from clay, which can be attached to the potions as external decorations.

Clay and stone water features don't have to be absolutely perfect. This is often what makes them so special. Nevertheless, experience is an advantage here. Special tools are required when working with stone. Working with clay requires knowledge of the material. A turntable is useful and an opportunity to burn the finished works is essential.

tips

Google pottery or stone carving classes near you. In such a course with professional guidance, your project can be implemented most easily.

Alternative: bird bath made of clay pots

Maybe you have some old clay pots lying around somewhere. A bird bath made of clay pots is easier for amateurs to "tinker together" than making a complete bird bath out of clay yourself. You need:

  • 2 large clay pots
  • a very large trivet made of clay
  • tile glue
  • possibly color to embellish

instructions for construction

  1. Clean the pots and saucer and let everything dry again.
  2. Place the larger pot upside down.
  3. Apply a generous coat of tile adhesive to the bottom of the pot that is pointing upwards.
  4. Place the second clay pot on top. In such a way that its opening points upwards and consequently both pan bases touch.
  5. Coat the rim of the top clay pot with tile adhesive and then stick the trivet on top. Its opening should face up.
  6. Let the construction dry.

tips

After the tile adhesive has dried, you can paint the bird bath with waterproof paints as you wish.

concrete and cast stone

With concrete and cast stone, any reasonably patient and diligent DIY enthusiast can build an attractive bird bath. This is first poured into shape and then smoothed and embellished with fine work after drying. You can get the necessary material at the hardware store.

You will also need a bucket for mixing and a trowel. A brush is also helpful, with which the shapes are brushed with oil. Most everyone already has a hand brush at home for brushing off the bird bath.

If you want a colorful look, you can get suitable paints in stores and paint small works of art on the bird bath.

tips

A respirator is a must when mixing concrete or grinding concrete molds. A lot of fine dust is whirled up.

Instructions for the basic shape

Making a concrete bird bath yourself is not difficult. This also applies to cast stone.

  1. Find two suitable plastic trays to pour the mold. They should be of different sizes and stackable inside each other.
  2. Mix the concrete or cast stone.
  3. Oil the outside of the small bowl and the inside of the large bowl to keep the icing from sticking.
  4. Put the concrete or cast stone into the large bowl. Shake it or move the shell back and forth so that the concrete can be better distributed and the air bubbles can escape.
  5. Place the smaller shell on top and push deeper into the concrete if necessary.
  6. If necessary, add more concrete in the space between the two shells.
  7. Let the mold dry for 2 to 3 days.
  8. Detach the dried mold from the shells.
  9. Sand the surfaces smooth with a sanding sponge so that the birds cannot injure themselves. After that you can paint the shape.

Set up a bird bath

Give as much attention to setting up the bird bath as to making it. If it is in an inappropriate location, the bird bath will not be accepted. First and foremost, the birds must be able to recognize approaching dangers in good time and avoid them by flying away. Bushes are an advantage, but they can only be about 3 m away. In addition, the drinking trough may only be placed on a mowed lawn or raised on a stand.
