Privet is a robust plant that can hardly be stopped in its growth. But even she has her limits. Don't worry, not every fungal pathogen can bring down the privet. To rob him of his beauty, on the other hand, is easy. For example, by covering the leafy green with spots.

Leaf spot disease begins quite inconspicuously

The causative agent of leaf spot disease

There are usually different types of fungi that are responsible for the formation of spots. The privet is just one possible victim in the home garden. Hydrangeas and rhododendrons also often suffer from leaf spot disease, as do some other plant species, including vegetables such as cucumbers. Even if the affected plant survives a season unscathed, the pathogen lurks on the ground and strikes again. Therefore, the owner is asked to do something about it.

The visible symptoms

An infested privet soon shows visible symptoms of the disease:

  • brown spots appear on leaves
  • they can also take on black coloring
  • they occur preferentially in humid summer weather
  • as the disease progresses, more and more leaves fall off

Combat leaf spot disease

Unfortunately, we do not have any home remedies for leaf spot disease. The most important tool in the fight against the fungal pathogen is therefore scissors. With the privet, it only has to be used when the infestation is clearly evident. The privet will survive a weak infestation on its own.

  • remove all affected parts of the plant
  • Burn cut off or dispose of with household waste
  • Gather and dispose of fallen leaves
  • disinfect the scissors before and after cutting

strengthen plant

For the time being, nitrogen-heavy fertilization should be avoided, as this causes the plant tissue to become spongy. So the fungal pathogen has an easy time. Various plant strengtheners available on the market as well as homemade plant broths can give the privet more resistance.

Other preventive measures

So that the fungus cannot strike again, the soil below the privet should be removed about 5 cm deep in late autumn. Also, avoid anything that further weakens the vitality of the plant. So it is essential to fertilize as needed. Planting too close together is also unfavorable, since wet leaves have a hard time drying off. In the future, only water the privet over the roots without wetting its leaves with water.
