Java moss grows in the aquarium under almost all conditions. But if you don't want to leave the sprouting of new branches to chance, support the bright green plant wherever you can. In this way, the optimum is obtained from its growth potential.

Java moss grows rather slowly

pace of growth

After the java moss has been tied to a suitable object in the aquarium, it takes about two weeks to get used to the new environment. Then he starts to grow. The focus is initially on the formation of adhesive roots, with which Java moss clings to the substrate.

Java moss is not one of the fast-growing plants in the aquarium. But it grows perseverance bit by bit.

direction of growth

The branches of this type of moss grow perpendicularly to the side, which is why Java moss conquers space rather than height. Over time, whole carpets of moss form, which can cover the pool like a lawn.

The growth is also so dense that the branches can form a felt. So that the moss is not soiled by adhering floating particles, new growth should be trimmed out with scissors if necessary.

tips

You can easily propagate Java moss by separating a piece from the existing carpet of moss and replanting it in a different place in the aquarium.

growth height

The java moss is a comparatively small plant. Usually it is just 5 to 10 cm high. Rarely it is reported that it can grow up to 20 cm high. With such a short growth, the java moss is in good hands in the front part of the aquarium.

Ideal growing environment

The accepted temperature is between 15 and 30 °C. But this plant grows best at around 24 °C. Water hardness and pH play a subordinate role. A pH value between 5-8 is considered ideal.

Java moss needs a lot of light. Its place should therefore be sunny to semi-shady. If it grows too dark, a lamp must provide it with additional light.

Care for rapid growth

Improved living conditions and good care can favorably influence the growth of java moss.

  • Clean water changed weekly
  • a lot of CO2
  • regular fertilizing
