Chestnuts or chestnuts, both are names for sweet chestnuts that ripen in autumn and come onto the market. They taste great on their own or as an accompaniment to Christmas goose. However, before chestnuts can be eaten or processed, they must be baked or boiled and then peeled.

Chestnut peeling made easy
If you follow a few tips and tricks when peeling the chestnuts, the delicious fruit can be peeled quickly.
Choose between three peeling options:
- Peel the chestnuts using the oven
- Cook the chestnuts on the stove and then peel them
- Peel the chestnuts using the microwave
In all variants, the fruit is first scratched crosswise on the curved side. This way, the peel will come off easily later and the pulp will not burst when heated. If you put the chestnuts in cold water for an hour beforehand, the peeling will be even easier.
Peel with oven
- Preheat the oven to 175° convection/ 200° electric stove.
- Place parchment paper on a baking tray and place the chestnuts on it.
- Place an ovenproof bowl with water on the tray with the fruit. That way the chestnuts don't dry out.
- Roast the chestnuts for about 20 minutes until the skin cracks open.
- Take the fruit out of the oven and let it cool down a bit.
- Peel the warm chestnuts with a knife.
- It is best to hold the chestnuts with an oven glove so that you do not burn yourself.
- Put the peeled fruit in a tea towel and rub off the remaining skin and hairs.
peeling by cooking
- Put the carved chestnuts in a large saucepan.
- Fill the pot with water and place it on the stovetop.
- Boil the chestnuts for about 20 minutes.
- Drain the water and peel the chestnuts while they are still warm. Again, use an oven mitt for protection.
Peel the chestnuts in the microwave
- Place the chestnuts in a microwave-safe bowl.
- Add some water and cover the bowl with a lid.
- Heat the chestnuts in the microwave for one minute. The resulting water vapor should detach the shell. The process may have to be repeated again.
- Remove the peel with a knife.
