If you want to have fresh garlic in your house all the time, you can easily grow new plants from the cloves. However, the varieties differ in terms of when they are planted and harvested. The plugging itself is easy.

Garlic cloves are best planted in spring

Spring or winter garlic

You can poke garlic cloves in fall or spring. Spring planting is recommended, since winter garlic is more likely to be attacked by pests and the bed requires care in the spring. The frost hardy varieties bring larger crop yields, while spring garlic develops smaller bulbs. This is suitable for beginners due to the low maintenance requirements.

planting dates:

  • spring garlic: between mid-February and mid-April
  • winter garlic: from mid-September to early October

preparations

Garlic thrives best on a harvested bed. If you want to grow garlic yourself, you should prepare the soil. Clear the area of weeds and loosen the substrate with a plow. Mix about two liters of compost per square meter into the soil. A plant line marks the row and makes it easier to insert. Take a head of garlic and separate the daughter cloves from the round.

Instructions for planting

The daughter tubers are placed upside down in the ground so that they are covered by a maximum of five centimeters of substrate. Place the toes at a slight angle in the planting hole. This measure prevents the development of root rot. There is a distance of 10 to 15 centimeters between the plants so that the herbs can develop unhindered.

If you missed the optimal planting date, let the garlic cloves germinate on the windowsill. Place them in a mini greenhouse (€7.95) whose bottom has been lined with damp kitchen paper. Put it in a bright place at room temperature. The seedlings are ready for planting as soon as the first shoots appear.

harvest

In the bed, the home-grown winter garlic is ready to harvest from mid-July. Spring garlic needs a little longer for the development of main and daughter cloves, so that the harvest takes place a few weeks after the frost-hardy varieties. Since the weather has a major impact on when to harvest, you should keep an eye on the plants. The right time to harvest has come when two-thirds of the foliage has turned yellow.
