- Divide oversized perennials
Pampas grass with its filigree fronds of flowers is a decorative eye-catcher in every garden. The ornamental grass is at its best when it stands alone. But it also forms a very nice background in the perennial bed and is also a good privacy screen.

Maintain pampas grass as a single plant
You should treat particularly beautiful varieties such as the pink pampas grass to a single place in the garden. It is particularly effective on large lawns.
To do this, cut out a circular piece of the lawn with a diameter of about one meter at the desired location. Even if the ornamental grass is initially very small, it will grow into a huge, decorative ornamental perennial in a few years.
Perennial beds with pampas grass
Due to its size, pampas grass belongs at the back of a perennial border or in a corner for ornamental grasses. Combine smaller ornamental grass varieties or colorful summer flowers in the foreground.
Long, slender bulbous plants such as gladioli in front of the pampas grass look particularly decorative. But purple lavender also harmonises very well with the ornamental grass.
Suitable plants to combine:
- low ornamental grasses
- catnip
- lavender
- onion plants
Combine different types of pampas grass
Pampas grass comes in different colors. The palette ranges from silver-grey to yellow to pink. Put different varieties next to each other. This allows a very decorative privacy screen to be designed.
Maintain sufficient planting distance
When combining pampas grass with other plants, consider size. A mature ornamental grass takes away light and sun from lower plants. Make sure all plants get enough nutrients.
Keep a distance of at least one meter.
Divide oversized perennials
If the pampas grass gets too big over the years, dig up the rootstock and divide the plant. You can rejuvenate them at the same time by removing rotten root parts.
It is often sufficient if you simply cut off the clump at the edge to reduce the size of the plant. Pampas grass is robust and will reliably sprout again.
Cut off root parts can be replanted in another place for propagation.
tips
Pampas grass is not poisonous. Nevertheless, caution is required when choosing a location. The leaves are razor sharp and can injure the skin if touched.
