Both leaves and flowers of water lilies are a special ornament in the pond. So that the swamp plants do not float to the surface, they must be planted. Ideally, this should be done without potting soil, as this affects, among other things, the quality of the water and thus the life of the other water dwellers.

Water lilies can be placed in the pond in the plant basket

Practical planting in the plant basket

Water lilies are not planted in the pond bottom, but in special pond plant baskets. They find support in it and also remain mobile at all times. You can easily lower them to the optimal water depth and remove them from the pond again if necessary.

The care of the water lily is also easier to carry out, as it can simply be taken out of the water for repotting and cutting.

tips

Choose the plant basket (€11.99) to match the type of water lily or the size of the plant. Also inquire about the optimal water depth, as this varies from variety to variety.

You can't do without a substrate entirely

In order for the water lily to be properly anchored in the plant basket, a substrate cannot be completely dispensed with. However, it must be such that it does not have the disadvantages of fine earth. So it has to be purely mineral, with no organic components. Gravel and crushed stone are good as long as it is a low-lime type of stone such as granite. Clay granules are also suitable and can even store oxygen.

Use ideal gravel size

Special water lily substrate is commercially available. But you can also mix the water lily substrate yourself. The gravel granulation must not be too fine.

  • from 2 mm
  • up to a maximum of 5 mm
  • use larger stones to weigh down if necessary

Plant water lily

Fill 2/3 of the plant basket with substrate. Lay water lilies with rhizomes flat on top. Plant all other water lilies vertically. Fill the rest of the pot with substrate. However, the eyes and shoots of the water lily must still protrude from the substrate. If necessary, you can weigh down the water lily with a few larger stones.

tips

Water lilies without a pronounced rhizome will find a better hold and take root faster if some loamy soil is added to the substrate.

Gradually lower the plant basket

A basket freshly planted with water lilies should not be placed immediately in its final location. Instead, it should be lowered gradually as growth progresses. This means that sheet formation requires less energy.
