Not everyone has a eucalyptus in their garden. Although the pruning means some maintenance due to the rapid growth, the planting is always worthwhile. After all, the tree with its intense scent proves to be a mosquito repellent, among other things. Added to this is its beautiful appearance. With these tips, your eucalyptus will develop well in the garden.

In mild regions in central Europe, eucalyptus also thrives in gardens

Plant eucalyptus in the garden

  1. Choose a suitable location (see below).
  2. Dig a hole.
  3. Work a layer of compost into the soil.
  4. Put the eucalyptus in the hole.
  5. Fill the hole with soil and tread firmly.
  6. Water the substrate.

What to look out for

Three things could make you decide against a eucalyptus in the garden:

  • Rapid growth, regular pruning is essential.
  • Many parts of the plant are slightly poisonous.
  • Other plants in the vicinity of the eucalyptus may die.

location

In addition, the eucalyptus needs a full sun location. The deciduous tree does not do well in shady gardens. In any case, he will not unfold his impressive optics here. As long as the soil provides sufficient nutrients, the eucalyptus does not make any special demands on the substrate. Nevertheless, no waterlogging should occur. The soil should therefore be well drained. In order to promote growth, it is advisable to support the tree with liquid fertilizer every two weeks in summer.

winter protection

With the exception of the eucalyptus gunii, the deciduous tree is unfortunately not hardy. Only tall trees over five meters long, which with the best will in the world cannot be moved indoors, are allowed to spend the winter outside. Nevertheless, you should protect the roots from frost with a layer of mulch. Keeping a bucket is therefore worth considering. While the tree enjoys sunbathing on the terrace in summer, it hibernates indoors when it is cold.
