More edible than poisonous
Canna is considered slightly poisonous. The only parts of the plant that are slightly poisonous are the leaves and stems. The toxins protect the plant from being eaten by pests. Especially pets like cats should not consume too much of it!
The thick rhizomes of the flower cane are very starchy and edible. They taste sweet and are vaguely reminiscent of sweet potatoes. The flowers can also be eaten, for example as a decorative accompaniment to salads and dishes.
tips and tricks
Canna bulbs should be cooked for several hours before consumption. In general, long cooking is not worthwhile. It is better to divide and plant the tubers to get new canna plants.
