In view of the different flowering times, beginners among hobby gardeners wonder when a clematis should be cut. For better orientation, the plant family has been divided into the following three cutting groups:

Pruning Group 1 - Spring Flowering Clematis

When a clematis blooms in spring, it has already budded the previous year. Prune Clematis alpina and similar species after flowering in June/July.

Pruning Group 2 - Twice Flowering Clematis

Twice-blooming clematis, like the world-famous clematis 'The President' or other hybrids, just trim after the first bloom. This group will receive the actual main cut in November/December. Additionally, these clematis receive a rejuvenation pruning every 4 to 5 years.

Pruning Group 3 - Summer Flowering Clematis

If a clematis develops its flowering splendor during the summer, cut back this specimen generously just before the first frost or in early spring. Seeds that form are removed promptly so that the clematis does not waste any energy in them.
