This Asian climber with amazing healing powers is still a newcomer to us. Did you know that it is also called women's ginseng, five-leaf ginseng or simply the herb of immortality? We will now familiarize you a little with this plant and answer in detail the question of the ideal overwintering.

If you want to get the leaves of the immortality herb, you should put Jiaogulan in a warm place in winter

Hardy, but with restrictions

Jiaogulan is only conditionally hardy. This means that the herb cannot safely survive every winter on its own. In order for it to survive outside, the thermometer must not fall below -15 °C.

Indoor plants stay in place

It may be storming and snowing outside, but inside the house it stays pleasantly warm. In it, the immortality herb, which is cultivated as a pure houseplant, does not get any frost. You can relax and enjoy the green of the leaves, because there is no need to look for a place to spend the winter.

Since Jiaogulan has to get by with less light in winter, it is a good idea to cut the houseplant back a little. You can dry the cut leaves and use them to make tea.

tips

Cut shoots that have not yet lignified make good cuttings. In a warm place in the house you can also dare to multiply in autumn.

Bring bucket specimens to safety

Immortality herb in a tub can be in the garden or on the balcony on warm days. However, the bucket does not offer the roots sufficient protection against frost. Even wrapping with fleece and a protected place are not enough. In the fall, you need to find a new location in the house for Jiaogulan.

  • hibernate at temperatures of 15 to 20 °C
  • bright winter quarters are ideal
  • Cut back vigorously during dark overwintering

Leave immortality herb in the bed

Climbing plants planted in the garden can overwinter on the spot. If all parts of the plant above the ground die off in autumn, there is no need to worry. The plant lives anyway, albeit in secret! The rhizome will find the strength to sprout again in the spring. But until then you should not leave it without protection, despite winter hardiness. Better safe than sorry!

  • Young plants in particular need protection
  • also protect old specimens in rough situations
  • leave dried remains until spring
  • they keep you out of the cold
  • Cover the root area with brushwood, straw or lots of leaves

care in winter

All Jiaogulan plants that spend the winter in a bright, warm room will retain their green foliage. On the one hand, this is nice because you can continue to harvest leaves. At the same time, however, you must also provide her with a minimum level of care. Watering must not be forgotten at the outset.
