Aquarium plants are usually not selected according to the abundance of flowers. However, the flowers cannot be described as insignificant either, after all they are used in many types of propagation. Most of the time, however, they are inconspicuous and small.

How are the Echinodorus flowers used for propagation?
Sword plants (bot. Echinodorus) are rarely propagated by seed formation and sowing. However, this is the only form in which heredity plays a role. Offshoots and daughter plants are genetically identical to the respective mother plant.
Many species of Echinodorus form daughter plants on the inflorescence, but not all. The narrow-leaved sword plant (bot. Echinodorus angustifolius) reproduces by runners. These long rhizomes cause the plant to spread quickly throughout the aquarium.
The essentials in brief:
- Flowers usually small and inconspicuous
- frequent formation of daughter plants on the inflorescences
