Before a Guzmania withers and dries up, she generously gives us a few more gifts: she forms Kindel. Saying goodbye to the mother plant is then no longer difficult, because the space that has been freed up is well occupied. How to deal with a Kindle.

What is a child?
A child is a little seedling. It forms on a pre-existing mature plant. In due course it will be separated from its mother and henceforth allowed to lead an independent life. This type of bromeliad usually drives out several children. They grow side by side with her, which is why it can get tight in the pot.
time for separation
A Guzmania Kindel is ready for its own pot when it's about half the height of its mother plant. Ideally, the propagation is implemented on a spring day.
separate children
- Have a small, sharp and thoroughly disinfected knife ready.
- Grasp the baby in your hand and gently push the whole plant to the side or down. This makes the connection point with the nut more accessible.
- Now cut off the child directly on the stem of the mother plant.
plant children
Although a Guzmania is not usually repotted due to its short life expectancy, you should still not choose a pot that is too large for the child. Even as an adult plant, it will not require a large home for its roots.
Use normal potting soil mixed with sand in a 2:1 ratio. It is even better if you add some orchid soil to the potting soil. Cover the plant with glass or foil and keep warm. 25 °C without direct sun is ideal.
tips
Instead of using a cover to increase humidity, you can also mist the small plant with water daily.
Care of the young plant
Air the cover regularly. Pour with finesse, because the soil must not get too wet. A small amount of fertilizer can also be given with the irrigation water. After about four months, the cover can be completely removed. The plant is now treated like an adult in terms of care. However, it will take about two more years to flower.
