Not more than one tuber remains of the climbing Gloriosa in autumn. New growth can only be expected from mid-May when it is no longer freezing outside. Far too late to enjoy its flowers early! The warmth in the house is the solution, because it makes the tuber wake up prematurely.

end hibernation
In autumn, after the above-ground parts of the plant have withered, the tuber begins its hibernation. Either still in the pot where she spent the summer, or naked, dug out of the garden soil. At 10 degrees Celsius, dark, without water and fertilizer, she is waiting to be planted next spring.
While the tuber is only allowed outside after the ice saints, you can interrupt its hibernation as early as the end of February/mid-March so that it can grow indoors.
Prepare planter
Naked tubers of the Gloriosa rothschildiana, as the botanical name is, must be planted for propulsion. But specimens that have wintered in potting soil also need a substrate change.
- choose a large planter with drainage holes
- put in a drainage layer first
- fill up with permeable, loose substrate
- A mixture of potting soil, foliage soil and compost is ideal
- leave about 8 cm free up to the edge of the pot
plant tuber
- Examine each tuber to see whether it survived the winter well. Only perfect tubers are planted. There may already be young shoots and the direction of growth can be easily identified.
- Lay the bulb flat on the substrate. In a large pot you can also plant several tubers at once, as each tuber will only produce 1-2 shoots.
- Cover the tubers with 3-5 cm of soil.
- Water the planted tubers.
tips
When planting the tubers, pay attention to the buds at the tops of vegetation. You must not break off, otherwise the crown of glory, as Gloriosa is also called, will not drive out.
Find space to advance
The Crown of Glory needs a bright and warm place to advance. It should offer a minimum temperature of 22 °C, but no direct sun. The substrate must not dry out. As soon as the first leaves appear, the Gloriosa needs to be kept a little cooler. Then her care also begins, because she can be fertilized modestly for the first time.
Driving is finished in mid-May. You can place the Gloriosa outdoors with the pot or plant it in a bed.
