The curry herb (bot. Helichrysum italicum) is a plant that is as decorative as it is useful. Smaller varieties can be cultivated very well in pots and/or tubs, larger specimens need a generous amount of space. Curry herb grows very wide.

Curry herb needs as much sun as possible

When should I plant curry herb?

In principle, you can plant the curry herb during the entire vegetation period from spring to autumn. However, young plants are quite sensitive and not hardy. They should only be planted in the garden after the ice saints. Pot planting and repotting is possible all year round with appropriate ambient temperatures.

The right location

The location for your curry herb should be warm, sunny and dry.

The right soil

The curry herb does not need particularly many nutrients. It is more used to a lean soil. This may well contain certain parts of sand or be stony. You can make soil that is too rich by adding expanded clay, (19.73€) gravel or sand to make it more permeable and leaner.

Do not fertilize your curry herb. You should also not give fertilizer when planting. Fresh potting soil already contains more than enough nutrients. You can only provide old herb plants with a little additional fertilizer, but only sparingly.

The right care

Curry herb is very easy to care for, only young plants should be watered regularly. However, you can be quite economical, too much moisture is more harmful than a short dry period. Only water older plants in the bed if the drought lasts longer in summer.

The situation is different when growing curry herb in a tub or pot. Daily watering on hot days is recommended here. Ideally, you should do this work in the (early) evening when the herb is no longer in the blazing sun.

The essentials in brief:

  • bright warm location
  • rather dry and lean soil, like sandy or stony
  • Keeping buckets possible
  • do not fertilize when planting
  • water only in dry periods or with young plants
