Are you holding a spicy habanero? Then cut them open! With the seeds that you will discover inside, you can start your own cultivation. This text tells you what you need to know to be successful.

sowing
You can sow the seeds fresh or dry them first. The important thing is to choose the optimal time for sowing. Outdoors this is only possible from mid-May. The chili is too cold beforehand. But waiting until May costs valuable time that the plant will miss later.
You must act as early as mid-February. Find a bright place in the house with a temperature of at least 22 °C. There you can sow the seeds in a large pot.
- use sterilized potting soil
- Cover seeds with a little soil, press down lightly
- Keep soil constantly moist
- Cover pots with foil or glass
- air occasionally until germination
pricking
As soon as the seedlings have two pairs of leaves, the strongest specimens are planted in their own pots in loose soil. They remain indoors in a light and warm place. If the outside temperature is above 8 degrees Celsius, the pots are allowed outside for hours to harden.
Prepare bed
Find an open spot in the bed that gets the sun for many hours a day. Prepare the bed for planting by mid-May. Loosen the soil, remove weeds and work in a good amount of compost.
plant
- Dig a sufficiently large planting hole. The root ball must fit snugly without the roots buckling.
- Take the chili out of the pot and place it in the prepared hole along with the potting soil. The root ball should be about 1 cm below the bed surface.
- Fill in the gaps with soil.
- Plant the next chili plant about 40 cm apart.
- Then water all the chili plants well.
tips
If you don't have a garden available, you can also plant the habanero in a large pot. Here, however, the need for care is higher.
maintenance
Habanero plants need water regularly, but must not be too wet. While the nutrients from the compost will last for several weeks, nettle manure can later be used as an ecologically compatible fertilizer. It doesn't require much more care.
harvest
Depending on the variety, ripening takes about 70 to 100 days from sowing. You can tell from the changed color of the fruit when you can start harvesting.
tips
You can dry and preserve excess habaneros. And don't forget to save seeds for the following year.
