Autumn is the best time to plant many types of flower bulbs. This planting time has its justification, although flowering follows months later. Of course, there are a few rules to follow when planting in the fall. The approaching winter must also be kept in mind.

Plant spring flowering bulbs in the fall
In autumn the summer flowers have disappeared from the beds. There is plenty of free space for flower bulbs. It is the spring flowering bulbs that are being planted now. They owe the fact that they are allowed to go into the ground before winter to their winter hardiness. On the other hand, summer flowering bulbous plants do not tolerate frost.
Autumn is the best time to plant for two reasons: it's still warm enough for the bulbs to take root. And it's cold enough so they don't sprout. At least mostly. Otherwise the planting date will be postponed to the end of the season.
Select flower bulbs
Flower bulbs planted in autumn have a long way to go before they sprout and flower. They have to survive a lot of cold and wet. This only works if they go into the ground in perfect condition. Therefore, buy onions that you can examine well. An ideal onion is:
- plump without soft spots
- dry
- mold free
tips
The flower bulbs should not have sprouted yet. Because the fresh green above the ground is not as frost-resistant as the flower bulb in the ground.
Plant in the garden
Those who have their own garden prefer to plant flower bulbs in flower beds. So that the individual types of flower bulbs come into their own, they are planted in small tuffs made up of several bulbs. You can also plant flower bulbs in the lawn. Some varieties then multiply diligently and become natural.
When planting, ensure a sunny location and loose soil. Planting distances of one bulb width and a planting depth of two bulb lengths are ideal.
pot planting
Even without a garden, the flowers of the onions can be conjured up. Planting in pots is a tried and tested way of bringing spring onto the balcony. The lasagne method, in which several layers of flower bulbs are planted, leads to a particularly rich flowering here.
However, frost is a major threat to flower bulbs in pots and balcony cheeses. They must be protected with plenty of fleece. It is even better if they overwinter in the basement at 0 to 8 degrees Celsius.
