Spring bloomers sprout early. That's why the bulbs are planted in autumn. They are waiting in the pot, ready to wake up with the first rays of the sun. But as long as the frost stays outside, they must surely hibernate.

Temperature fluctuations are unfavorable
Flower bulbs that sprout in early spring are hardy. But while they survive the necessary cold stimulus unscathed in the garden soil, they are exposed to temperature fluctuations in pots. These can have negative consequences:
- the earth freezes faster and with it the onions
- Sunbeams warm the soil and lead to premature budding
For these reasons, flower bulbs in pots should not overwinter outside if possible, or at least be given the best possible protection.
hibernation quarters
If you have the appropriate space, you should keep the planted pots frost-free.
- Put onions in pot
- Then store the pot at 0 to 8 degrees Celsius
- e.g. B. in a basement room
- Soil should be consistently moist
- water every 2 weeks as needed
tips
Since this overwintering method can be planted until late November, you may be able to get hold of cheap remaining items in the garden center.
Winter outside
If you cannot bring pots and balcony boxes (€109.00) inside, you can also overwinter the flower bulbs outside. This is not possible without appropriate protective measures:
- the bulbs must form roots
- so plant by mid-October at the latest
- Cover soil with a layer of sand
- set up protected
- Protect pots with styrofoam or wrap with fleece
- pay attention to constant soil moisture
