Do you still have a few flower bulbs left in January? Unfortunately, the autumn planting date is long past and spring is still a long way off. So what to do with it? Don't worry: the train hasn't quite left yet! This is how you can plant.

summer bloomers
Summer bloomers come from consistently warm regions of the world, they cannot survive frost unscathed. However, in January we find ourselves in the middle of winter. Outdoors, there may still be many frosty months waiting for the plants.
January is therefore out of the question as a planting date for summer flowering plants. They can advance in warm rooms, but this usually starts in February.
spring bloomers
Spring bloomers are set in the fall. Depending on the weather, the planting date is between mid-September and the end of December. However, since these bulbous plants are hardy, there is nothing wrong with January from this point of view.
If you discover a few forgotten flower bulbs in the garden shed or snag a special bargain at the hardware store, you can still plant the flower bulbs in January. However, it may well be that the ground is already frozen by then. This makes planting impossible.
tips
Plant the flower bulbs in planting trays in a cool basement so that the bulbs get the cold stimulus they need.
Delayed rooting
The reason spring bloomers are planted in the fall is so they can take root before the harsh winter. If, on the other hand, you only plant in January, rooting is made more difficult by the cold and is therefore delayed.
growth disorders
Onions planted in January may not sprout optimally. Growth disturbances are observed after January planting, especially with tulips and daffodils. For example, they can sprout lower. But already in the following year these defects no longer appear.
later flowering
Since the flower bulbs can take root later, their flowering time will be delayed accordingly. But that is still better than disposing of the flower bulbs unused.
Cultivate indoors
In January, individual bulbs can also be used to decorate your own four walls. If they have already come through a cold period in the cellar, they can be pushed forward in January:
- place individual flower bulbs in the glass
- plant in the pot
- cover with wax
Notice:
Flower bulbs that are already sprout should definitely be kept in a warm room in January. Only the bulb is hardy in the garden soil. The green, on the other hand, is sensitive and would freeze to death in sub-zero temperatures.
