Which flower bulbs to use?

All flower bulb varieties are suitable for pot planting. Tulips, daffodils and hyacinths, which bloom in spring, are particularly popular. Which flower bulbs you ultimately choose can be determined by your own taste. The time of flowering can also be a decisive selling point.

Suitable pots

Flower bulbs can root in practically any pot. It just needs to be deep enough so that there is still space for at least 3 cm of soil underneath the planted bulbs. Large holes are important so that excess water or rainwater can drain off easily. Otherwise the onions can rot.

In addition, the pot or the plant bowl can be selected according to your own aesthetic ideas. Flower boxes (€16.99) can also be planted with flower bulbs.

tips

If there are several pots, it is advisable to write small labels with the names of the varieties and put them in. This means that even in spring it is clear what will sprout where.

plant

Flower bulbs can be planted in pots from mid-September to early October. At the bottom there should be a drainage layer made of expanded clay (€19.73) so that water can drain off easily. To prevent this layer from mixing with the soil above, there is a layer of fleece in between.

Potted flower bulbs are planted in potting soil. The pot should be filled to about 15 cm below the rim. The flower bulbs will be distributed on top of this. The following applies:

  • there should be an onion-width of space between two onions
  • the planting depth is twice the bulb height
  • Cover onions with soil
  • water well

The Lasagna Method

It is also often recommended to layer the flower bulbs in the pot. This approach is also known as the lasagna method. In it, different types of flower bulbs should come to life and bloom one after the other.

When using the lasagne method, make sure to combine varieties with different bulb sizes or planting depths and different flowering times.

hibernate

After planting, the pots with the onions go into the cool basement to overwinter. Alternatively, the pots can also be buried in a cleared bed. They can even be overwintered outside in a sheltered spot if protected with plenty of fleece or styrofoam.

If you don't have a good place to overwinter, you should plant the flower bulbs in spring.

Notice:
The larger the pot, the better the chances of surviving overwintering outdoors.
