When buying, pay attention to hardy currant varieties that are resistant to currant diseases and pests.
Red currants
They are the best-known currants. They are characterized by their fresh red color. The taste is sweet with a slightly sour undertone.
- "Heinemanns Rote Spätlese" - blooms late, bears lots of fruit, suitable for immediate eating and processing
- "Makosta" - dark red, very aromatic noble variety
- “Rolan” - early harvest, resistant to fungal diseases
- "Rovada" - large, medium-red berries with a very good aroma
- “Telake” - bears very well, resistant to many currant diseases
Black Currants
The aroma of fresh blackcurrants is not for everyone because of the tart taste. Because of the high acid content, they are mainly processed with a lot of sugar to make desserts, jellies and juices.
- “Bona” - very fragrant
- "Ometa" - rich-bearing variety with aromatic berries, resistant to most diseases and pests
- "Silvergieters Schwarze" - cross-pollination necessary, aromatic and less tart than other varieties
- “Titania” - very large berries, resistant to fungal diseases and pests
- "KieRoyal" - early ripe, sweet, rain-resistant berries
White currants
White currants are not as aromatic and are a bit milder than the red varieties.
- "Blanka" - ready for harvest mid-early
- “Champagne” - fruity aroma, reminiscent of champagne
- "White Versailler" - very large, sugar-sweet berries, well suited for fresh consumption
bloodcurrants or ornamental currants
They are grown solely for their beautiful spring blooms. Numerous small bright red buds form on long panicles. White and red-white varieties are already on the market.
The plant produces few fruits that have hardly any aroma of their own and are therefore not suitable for consumption. However, the berries are not poisonous.
- "King Edward VII" - often found in home gardens
- "Atrorubens" - ideal for flowering hedges
- “Snowflame” - white-red flowers
- 'White Icicle' - white panicle flowers
