In contrast to false jasmine or scented jasmine, real jasmine is not hardy. The ornamental plant from Asia likes to spend the summer outdoors. In winter, however, it must be overwintered in a frost-free place.

Real jasmine does not tolerate temperatures below zero degrees

Real jasmine does not tolerate sub-zero temperatures

Even if it is repeatedly claimed: real jasmine is not hardy! When gardeners tell you that their jasmine can easily withstand temperatures down to minus 20 degrees, it is false jasmine, also known as scented jasmine.

Real jasmine freezes at temperatures around zero degrees. If you grow real jasmine in a tub on the terrace, you must bring it into winter quarters before the first frost.

The right winter quarters

It is best to overwinter real jasmine in a cool, preferably dark place in the house. The temperatures should never be higher than 10 degrees, rather lower. Therefore, a place in the living room or flower window is not suitable for wintering.

Overwintering in the cellar is possible without any problems. Real jasmine is deciduous and loses all its leaves in winter anyway.

Real jasmine is poisonous. Therefore, look for a place that children and pets cannot reach.

How to winter jasmine in the house

Real jasmine needs little care during the winter, but you must not neglect it completely:

  • don't let it dry out completely
  • do not fertilize
  • regularly check for white spiders and aphids

Water the real jasmine so that the root ball does not dry out completely. When the top layer of soil is dry, it's time to add some soft water.

After hibernation slowly get used to the light

From the end of April, you start slowly waking the jasmine from hibernation.

Put it in the light by the hour. After the ice saints, the bucket can go out on the terrace all day long.

Cut the real jasmine beforehand and repot it into a larger planter if necessary.

tips

There is only one species of true jasmine that is hardy. This is the yellow-flowering species Jasmine nudiflorum. It is the only true jasmine variety that you can keep outdoors all year round.
