Contrary to popular belief, none of the parts of the sloe plant are highly poisonous. However, you should not bite or swallow the relatively large stones of the dark blue to black fruits, as they contain small traces of hydrocyanic acid. However, this is no reason to avoid sloe berries as flavor carriers in jams or liqueurs.

Safe for adults

The hydrocyanic acid glycoside amygdalin contained in the core is converted to hydrocyanic acid in the body. However, the content of this substance in the sloe kernels is far lower than in bitter almonds, apple or apricot kernels. Even if you marinate the fruits of the sloe in alcohol for several weeks when making an aromatic liqueur, only a small amount of the glycoside gets into the drink and poisoning is impossible with the amounts usually consumed.

If children consume large amounts of sloe kernels, it can be dangerous because the child's body cannot neutralize the poison quickly enough! If your child has accidentally tasted a large amount of fruit, you should therefore consult a doctor immediately.

Sloeberries - treat for birds

The dense thorny undergrowth of the shrub offers numerous birds shelter and can hardly be penetrated by enemies. Due to their size and color, sloe berries are a popular food for the feathered tenants, who can only use the pulp because of the poisonous core. The sloe kernel is excreted undigested and reaches distant areas with the faeces of the animals.

Valuable medicinal plant

Since the ingredients in raw sloe berries have a strong adrift and laxative effect, they are not suitable for raw consumption. The tannins contained in large quantities are responsible for the unpleasantly sour taste. A furry, numb feeling remains on the tongue and mucous membranes.

Because of these valuable ingredients, all parts of the blackthorn plant are used in naturopathy. Hildegard von Bingen and Sebastian Kneipp already reported on the positive effects of sloe on health. An infusion of the flowers or leaves of the sloe is suitable

  • gentle laxative
  • gentle remedy for coughs and colds
  • Effective natural medicine for dehydration.

In therapeutic doses, side effects are not to be feared. Nevertheless, you should consult an art or naturopath in case of complaints before use.
