The sloe is native to all of Europe and can be found there at altitudes of up to 1,400 meters. In the wild, the blackthorn is often found at the edges of forests and as a path border and provides bees and birds with plenty of food.

The sloe loves it warm and dry

So that the wild fruit bush enchants the garden with a white bloom in spring and bears plenty of fruit in autumn, you should give it the brightest possible location. The thorny shrub needs a lot of space to thrive. It is therefore more suitable for spacious gardens.

The ideal site conditions:

  • warm and full sun
  • dry, well-drained soil
  • calcareous, nutrient-rich substrate

Especially when planting a sloe hedge, you should make sure that all plants have roughly the same conditions. This is the only way for the hedge to develop into an evenly grown privacy screen. I can socialize the sloe well with wild shrubs such as cherry laurel, hawthorn, juniper or wild roses.
