As a dioecious plant, sea buckthorn only bears fruit if at least one male representative is standing next to a female specimen. The sea buckthorn variety called Leikora is a female variety. You can find out what its characteristics and arguments are in the following lines.

This variety has proven itself

The Leikora variety saw the light of day in the GDR era. It was selected in Leitzkau and recognized in the GDR in 1979. From that point on, it was commercially available.

To date, it has proven itself and is considered the most popular female variety of sea buckthorn. Their fruits in particular contribute to this. In contrast to the original wild species and other cultivated varieties, the fruits of this specimen are larger and occupy the shoots densely packed together.

The growth behavior of Leikora

The growth pattern of the sea buckthorn Leikora is difficult to distinguish from other varieties. This variety has a strong and compact habit. It reaches a width between 150 and 250 cm. In height it takes on a dimension between 300 and 450 cm. In rarer cases, it cracks the 6-meter mark.

Overall, the appearance of the sea buckthorn Leikora is shrub-like: well branched, upright and loose. The heavily prickly main shoots strive upright, while the side shoots, which are also reinforced, overhang a little, especially with fruit.

Fewer root suckers than others

This variety gets by with significantly fewer root suckers. Unlike other varieties of sea buckthorn, owning Leikora makes it easier for you to master things and the risk of cracked paving slabs is much lower.

Numerous, large and tasty - the fruits of Leikora

If there is a male specimen of its kind next to the sea buckthorn Leikora, the flowers, which are present from March to April, can be reliably pollinated. For example, the well-known variety Pollmix is suitable as a pollinator.

The fruits are characterized by the following characteristics:

  • Ripening from mid-September to early October
  • long lasting color
  • 6 to 8 mm long and therefore comparatively large
  • regular and high crop yields

tips and tricks

Although this variety produces only a few runners, you should be careful. Do not plant them near flagstones, paving stones or even directly in front of the patio - this could be destructive.
