Lemon trees come in a variety of growth forms. High stems are particularly popular. The price of a lemon tree depends on its size and age.

Where can I buy a lemon tree?
Basically, you can buy lemon trees anywhere. Possible addresses are:
- garden centers and hardware stores
- Garden centers and nurseries specializing in Mediterranean / exotic plants
- various internet shops
- or private providers.
The plants offered are represented in (almost) all age groups, sizes and growth forms, so that you can choose the lemon tree that suits you best. Private providers usually sell old solitaires that they can no longer or do not want to accommodate and sometimes also their own offspring. When it comes to online shops, you should definitely make sure that you buy your tree from a reputable dealer - this cannot be said often enough, because there are many black sheep romping about in the vastness of the World Wide Web. Incidentally, lemon trees can only be delivered in frost-free weather. As a rule, the trees already bear flowers and maybe even some fruit.
Health check before purchase
Before making any purchase, you should always check the health of the lemon tree you are targeting to avoid any nasty surprises. Here is our checklist:
- The roots should be strong and sufficiently developed.
- The substrate should not contain clay.
- Thoroughly inspect shoots and leaves for signs of damage and pests.
- Pay attention to the vigor: does the tree make a strong and healthy overall impression?
- What color are the leaves? These should be bright green and not make a faded impression or even have a yellowish discoloration.
Prefer grafted plants
Grafting is to be preferred, as the grafting base usually has a much better robustness and resistance to diseases and climatic influences. In addition, grafted lemon trees flower and bear fruit much earlier because their youth phase has been greatly reduced. If possible, a bitter orange or bitter lemon (this is frost-hard and therefore particularly resistant) should have been used as a finishing base.
Reasonable prices for a lemon
In principle, half or high stems are more expensive than lemon bushes. A young bush, about 20 to 30 centimeters high, usually costs around 15 to 25 euros, but a standard tree of the same size costs an average of 10 euros more. In addition to the growth form, it is above all the height and thus the age that determines the price. Lemon trees that are three to four years old cost around 35 euros and upwards, for older trees 50 to 60 euros are also reasonable. Very old and large solitaires are rare and can cost several hundred euros.
tips and tricks
Lemons are popular espalier plants, which are often commercially available as round or flat espaliers. These plants need particularly intensive care, as well as a sheltered (if possible covered) outdoor space.
