It is very rare for a blood currant not to develop flowers. In most cases, this is due to a wrong pruning. Occasionally, a poor location or completely depleted soil will prevent spring flowering.

Blood currants are undemanding garden dwellers that don't require much maintenance. Even on dirt roads and forest edges, they show their abundance of flowers as a very young plant in spring.

The location in the garden should be as sunny or at least partially shaded as possible. Since the plants get along very well with nutrient-poor soils, frequent fertilizing is not necessary. You can only give some nettle manure or plant fertilizer occasionally if the soil is very poor.

Like all currant varieties, the blood currant does not tolerate waterlogging. A loose soil is therefore a prerequisite for good growth.

Make sure you have a sheltered place

In a sheltered place, blood currants will produce many more flowers than in a windy location. If your blood currant has little or no flowering, plant it in front of a wall.

Never prune blood currants radically

A radical pruning to promote flowering does not make sense. The willingness to bloom is not stimulated by the cut. On the contrary, after a complete pruning, the blood currant will not bloom at all the next year.

Only cut your bloodcurrants when absolutely necessary.

Prune blood currants immediately after flowering

Blood currants form branches in the current year, on which the flowers for the coming spring grow.

If you do not want to do without pruning, only cut the shrub back immediately after flowering in May. If pruning the bloodcurrant later in the summer, fall, or early spring, remove any shoots that will have new flowers next year.

You can safely cut all dried and diseased shoots in autumn. You can cut branches that grow vertically, as well as water shoots that sprout from the ground next to the main trunk.

tips and tricks

If the bloodcurrant has spread too much, you can prune it in the fall. To do this, only the excess shoots are pruned directly at the base. After a heavy pruning in autumn, however, you must expect that the shrub will only develop a few flowers in the following spring.
