Garden blueberries are the specially cultivated cultivated blueberries, which are only very distantly related to the forest blueberries that grow in bog forests and clearings in this country. These produce larger fruits and also form taller bushes.

The advantages and disadvantages of garden blueberries

Forest blueberry lovers usually don't want to know much about garden blueberries, because they can hardly compete with those collected in the wild in terms of taste and vitamin richness. Nevertheless, garden blueberries offer other advantages besides greater protection against fox tapeworm. These include the following advantages in particular:

  • the fruit juice does not stain hands and tongues blue
  • the fruits are larger and juicier
  • the shrubs, which are up to 2 meters high, bear a great deal of fruit

Appropriate soil preparation is also necessary for planting the garden blueberries from North America in most gardens. Since the plants need a rather acidic and lime-free soil with a pH value between 4.0 and 5.0, cultivation in pots or a large-scale soil exchange is usually necessary. For the ideal location for blueberries, garden peat or rhododendron soil should be mixed with some sand and a small amount of horn shavings (€32.93) as a mild fertiliser. Since the blueberries root more broadly than deeply, when replacing the substrate, care should be taken to ensure that the planting hole is excavated appropriately wide. If you want to do without garden peat for ecological reasons, you can also acidify a soil that is not too loamy and rather low in lime by mixing in spruce needle compost and sawdust.

The care of garden blueberries

In a location in full sun, you should ensure that there is an adequate water supply, especially during the harvest season from July to September. Since fruit is constantly ripening on the bushes, a regular harvest every few days is recommended. If there are more blueberries than can be eaten fresh, they can be boiled down into jams, compotes and fruit juices.

Cultivated blueberries for the garden grow much faster than their wild relatives in the bog forest. You should therefore keep a distance of at least 1 to 1.5 meters between the individual plants in the row when planting.
