Cherry trees are common in home gardens. They do not require excessive care, delight with their fragrant flowers in spring and reward with their tasty and healthy fruits in summer.

Which cherry trees are suitable for growing in the home garden?

Depending on the size of the garden, cherry trees in the form of standard, half-stem or bush trees are suitable for cultivation in the home garden. Columnar and shaped fruit can also be grown on the terrace or balcony in sufficiently large planters. The selection of varieties is considerable for both sweet and sour cherries. You shouldn't just be guided by the taste of the fruit, but above all by the local and climatic conditions.

Where do cherry trees thrive?

Cherry trees - especially the sour cherries - do not have high demands on the location. As long as the garden area is sufficiently sunny and protected and the soil is not too heavy or too wet, the sweet and sour cherry trees planted in the right location will deliver consistently high yields. Due to the early flowering, the cultivation of sweet cherries in late frost is only possible to a limited extent.

When and how to plant cherry trees

Autumn planting is best for sweet and sour cherries. The young cherry trees develop wound tissue and fibrous roots during the course of the winter months, as long as there are no degrees of frost. They are therefore partially rooted by the time they begin to sprout and can immediately start absorbing water and nutrients normally. Do not plant before mid-October.

How do you propagate cherry trees?

Every cherry tree consists of at least two plant parts: a root part (the base) and a shoot part (the scion). Propagation takes place by grafting scion onto the rootstock. In this way, the scion lives on in the new cherry tree. In principle, it is possible to grow a cherry tree from a cherry stone. However, it remains uncertain which fruits or whether it will bear any fruits at all. The risk of sexual reproduction is therefore avoided in fruit cultivation and vegetative propagation is carried out by means of grafting.

Do many flowers also mean many fruits?

The sweet cherry starts to bloom from mid-April and the sour cherry from the end of April/beginning of May. In general, the numerous flowers promise a good yield. However, the flower must first be fertilized in order for a cherry to develop. Most tart cherry varieties are self-fertile, the sweet cherries usually need a suitable pollinating cherry tree nearby that is flowering at the same time.

tips and tricks

An important care measure for cherry trees is regular pruning. This not only keeps the crown in shape, but also promotes flowering and yield performance.
