Those who like to cook and bake often have lemons at home. The sour, but very vitamin-rich juice is often used as an acidifier for various dishes and drinks. Depending on the variety, lemons have between 20 and 50 seeds. Instead of just throwing them away, you can easily grow a lemon tree from them. It only takes a little time until you can harvest your own lemon trees, because home-grown lemon trees blossom and bear fruit after eight to twelve years at the earliest.

Lemon tree is suitable for balconies, gardens and conservatories

In contrast to many other plants, a lemon tree can be sowed quite easily, and in most cases it will grow into a pretty houseplant within a few weeks and months. This makes the lemon a wonderful gardening test object for children as well as for adults who do not yet have much experience in plant cultivation.

The procurement of the seeds

You can get the right seed cheaply in every supermarket and discounter: simply select a fresh, fully ripe lemon and take it home with you. It doesn't even have to be an organic lemon, but the fruit shouldn't have been irradiated - this treatment renders the seeds incapable of germination. Your local supermarket may even label each variety so you can choose accordingly. Fruits of the "four season lemon" (Lunario) and the Eureka lemon are often found in the trade. The "Eureka" in particular is quite sensitive to cold, but also rather slow-growing with many fruits.

Plant a lemon seed

You can also find everything else you need for planting a lemon seed in your supermarket. you need

  • a plant pot
  • Potting soil (can be bought in small bags)
  • and small pebbles

Fill a layer of pebbles at the bottom of the plant pot. These ensure that excess irrigation water is drained off quickly and deadly waterlogging is avoided for the plant. Fill the pot with potting soil and put the cleaned lemon stone in it. It should be covered with a maximum of one centimeter of soil. Water the soil and now put a clear plastic bag over the pot - this will help develop high humidity. Place the pot in a moderately bright but very warm location. The lemon seed will germinate within a few weeks.

Caring for the lemon tree properly

As soon as the first greens emerge from the soil, you should remove the plastic bag. From now on it gets a little more complicated, because as easy as it is to germinate a lemon seed, the resulting lemon needs to be cared for with care. need lemons

  • a very bright and sheltered location
  • lots of sun and warmth
  • need to be watered regularly
  • but not too much either
  • fertilizer regularly from an age of approx. 6 months
  • lots of space
  • in summer fresh air on the balcony or in the garden
  • in winter a cool but frost-free and bright spot
