Hidden deep underground, they are easily forgotten. But it is advisable not to lose sight of them completely. Why and which characteristics make up the roots of the hazelnut is explained in more detail in the following lines.

Essential characteristics of hazelnut roots
There is one horizontally reaching taproot and some vertical side roots that are close to the surface of the soil. The root system bites firmly into the ground:
- maximum depth: 4 m
- densest structure: at a depth between 30 and 40 cm
- due to the depth of the roots: when transplanting or removing from a hazel bush or hazel tree, dig at least that deep
But the considerable depth also has advantages: there is usually no danger for surrounding plants to be pushed out by the roots of the hazelnut. In addition, the intensively branched roots are extremely robust and true survivors.
Gladly underestimated…
Even after a radical pruning of the hazelnut, the roots like to sprout offshoots. Because of this, removing a hazel bush can be difficult. On the other hand, it is extremely easy to propagate this plant…

Since the roots are extremely willing to survive, the choice of location should be well thought out!
