The Prunus family

The almond tree belongs to the Prunus genus. Within these it is at home in the subgenus Amygdalus. Linnaeus published his official scientific name for the first time in 1753.

In general, a distinction is made between sweet and bitter almonds. Last but not least, the genus name Amygdalus refers to the existence of the poisonous hydrocyanic acid in the almond fruit. However, a harmful amount is only found in raw bitter almonds.

Small shrub makes a big difference

Originally, the almond was mainly cultivated in southern climate zones. There it reaches a stately size of up to 10 meters. With appropriate care, a harvest that is as rich as it is digestible can be expected.

Traditionally, long iron bars were used for this. With the help of these, harvest workers shook down the nutty fruits. Over time, almond growers also take advantage of technological advances. More and more often, however, this leads to the decay of large almond plantations in southern countries.

Nevertheless, the almond blossom is celebrated annually in this country with great festivities and culinary delights.
