If you don't plan well from the start, you will get angry later. The hazelnut spreads quickly at its location and can reach heights of up to 7 m if it is not trimmed regularly.

However, its size is not the biggest problem. It is its roots that make removing it a cumbersome procedure. Even if you saw off the stems of the hazelnut deeply, it will happily sprout again above its root shoots… Two methods can help now!

Method #1: Regularity brings success

This method requires patience. How to proceed:

  • Saw off all branches and twigs ruthlessly.
  • Clear the trunk or trunks.
  • Since new shoots keep appearing over time: remove the new shoots.
  • After about 3 years, the plant runs out of strength and no longer sprout.

Method #2: Radical and labor intensive

This method is more labor intensive. With her, the roots of the hazelnut - regardless of whether it is a hazelnut tree or a hazelnut bush - are removed. This requires effort and a lot of time. The reason: The hazelnut is a flat-rooted plant, but has a strong taproot that can reach up to 4 m deep with bad luck.

  • Expose as deeply as possible around the hazelnut (lateral roots extend up to 6 m from the trunk).
  • Expose and remove the root stem.
